Since its inception VARRAT has championed the message of Preventive Health Care rather than focusing on Curative measures. In fact, without undermining the basic importance of curative measures towards the survival fitness of rural resource poor – organization has been supportive to Govt. and convergence agents at all levels. Further to this – support in the field of Promotive Health has pursued Govt. pro-action and enabled increased access on the part of health service seekers.

Since 2008 VARRAT has been undertaking HIV prevention work under TI project in Pattamundai and Kendrapara area with focus on FSW covering targeted population of 250 including 105 in Pattamundai NAC.  The basic objective was – (1) To alter and reverse HIV epidemic by 2012 (2) Reduce the Stigma and Discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS

Empowering the poor and deprived mass through education has been one of the most acclaimed activities of VARRAT since long. It has been undertaking Education Promotion among children and youth through home based care, crèche/balwadi under centre based care, ensure child rights and participation through child clubs and facilitate quality in basic education are among the primary activities.

VARRAT has long association with people – especially resource poor rural people since its very inception. In fact, over the years – it has undertaken a number of area specific livelihood promotion interventions in the field of Pisci-culture, Livestock management, Small Business and Agriculture promotion etc through the involvement of rural youths and women. More particularly the ICT based Agro Extension in Keonjhar District has proved to be more beneficial than the traditional extension system.

With the broad goal of developing skill of rural poor – organization had undertaken efforts for Skilled and Involved Youth to enable them to lead a life of esteem and self reliance through Career Counseling and different Employable trainings.

Children are the future of the Nation and are more vulnerable to the situations. Keeping this prospect in view the organization VARRAT left no stone unturned to provide quality service to the children on different age specific interventions. The Deprived, Excluded and Vulnerable children are the target of the activities.  The child not only learns from the class room but also learn from the family, peer groups, elders last but not least from the society and nature.  Realizing this, the organization laid stress upon home based care, centres based care, basic education, special education for dropouts and also create a common platform through Child Club in the villages where the children will dream their future and involve themselves in the process of village development. Starting from the conception till adulthood the stages are structured to ensure the rights and participation of the children at every sphere.

With due homage to the age of older people and their competencies, VARRAT initiated collaborative effort to improve their status and created a community sensitivity towards the cause of their self respect and dignity through promotion of Elders Self Help Groups, Livelihood Support and different community empowerment activities for enhancing the inter personal relationship with children and youth.

The involvement of VARRAT with grass roots level people, their associates as well as the service providers has been a meticulous on going work that has not only helped it to reach to the unreached but also helped retaining the involvement of people’s association in follow up activities and thus sustaining the momentum of various people centered activities in most authentic manner. Over the years – VARRAT has ensured involvement of people through village level Jana Jagruti Sangathan (JJS) in different streams of society and from different corners of its operational area pursuing their organized efforts. In order to deliver the responsibility and ownership of the programs the Central Jana Jagruti Sanghathan, Federation of Women SHG’s in the name of VGMBM has been promoted and strengthened.

Because of the proximity of the area Both Keonjhar and Kendrapara to the calamities needs due attention to the preparedness in order to reduce the climatic extremes to a greater extent and can lessen the extent of damage and loss occurred due to that.  Village people are sensitized and process of community based disaster preparedness has been strengthened.  Orientation and mock drill process are the on going ones to keep up the practice.  The forest protection committee has been sensitized and steps have been taken to protect and create more forest and mangroves.  Drought protection activities are also undertaken.

The degraded situation of the natural environment has made the Organisation enthusiastic since from its inception to undertake Natural Environmental promotional activities. The organization has very well realized the importance of protecting the Environment and ensuring further process to promote awareness and community action towards eco restoration through continuous efforts. And hence since then it has been pursuing community action with focus on Community Forestry, Agro Forestry, Village Forest Management, Livelihood supportive Natural Resource Management and Mangrove Conservation which has proved quite prudent and productive in articulated manner.
