EDUCATION

STORY ABOUT A DROP OUT CHILD

Palanghati a village in Patna block of Keonjhar District and mostly the inhabitants are tribal. As the villagers are illiterate and ignorant, they do not have any interest in education of their children. As result most of the children do not attend the school or discontinue at the early stage if admitted. Similarly Chandamani Munda daughter of Lambodar Munda quitted school from class IX. Now she is 17 years old. She engaged herself in doing house hold works and acting as a day labor. On behalf of VARRAT a vocational training on Bee keeping was organized from 6th January 2010 to 10th January 2010. Chandamani was among the participants of this training. She completed her training successfully and she was very interested and very attentive in learning.
After receiving this training she started Bee keeping. After 2 months 2 kgs of honey was produced. As bee keeping is a profitable one, hence she is continuing it. Now she has started earning money respectfully and simultaneously supports her family what so ever she gets.
Being inspired by Chandamani the youth of the village are very interested for bee keeping and some have already started.

That old man who was unable to walk without support of any person has meanwhile been able to stand erect. He is now taking his cow for grazing regularly and attends evening prayer at community level every evening. His wife is cooperating him in family maintenance and tilling the land he does have. Once now – when he met volunteer of VARRAT in his village in a community level celebration, with a smiling face he said – I conquered my life at the age of 80. Few months back I was quite desperate and my life was quite questionable.

The Charm Child

Madhusmita Swain, daughter of Gangadhar Swain belongs to Badatota village, Mahakalpara. She has born to a poor family and the most unfortunate is her father is liquor addict. It was difficult on the part of her father to maintain family and hence she discontinued education. Even though she competent enough to continue education – she was tortured and threatened by her father not to continue education and was compelled to start earning.

However, once Madhusmita met the field staff of VARRAT and the staff started pursuing her father. But they were rebuked and threatened. However, with the support of Mr. Vyasadev Bebarta, PET of Premchand High School, VARRAT could mobilize her mother Urmila to send her school regularly and thus she could continue education despite opposition of her father. In fact, she is also a good sports person and has participated in State level Kho Kho completion. As such she was in good book of many for her good manner and athletic competence.

To inspire her and boost her morale, VARRAT mobilized her to be member of Child Club in her village. And as such she could accelerate development activities related to Child Rights and Community based initiatives with support of her community. Needless to say – witnessing her extra sense of involvement in different development works at village level – her father was getting annoyed, scolded her and even misbehaved her. But she was unmoved and rather became proactive to motive children of village to get united and fight against injustice and atrocities against them. It is noteworthy that – she could be able to release a child labour (Pramod) who was working in a nearby Hotel. She compelled the hotel owner to release. Now Pramod is continuing his education in Premchand High School. And it could be possible only because of her proactive attitude and extra sense of throb towards children of her age or below who are tortured and cursed to deprivation and under-privilege for no fault of their.
